Hope battles it out with despair

This country is fucked, to say the least. The president continues to shock me with his blatant power grabs, though you’d think that I’d be used to it by now.

I’m truly afraid that this country is on the verge of becoming a full-fledged dictatorship. Don’t get me wrong: I’m well aware of all the horrible things pretty much every past president has done. But this feels different. Never before have we had such a corrupt presidency full of nepotism and profiting from the office. Never before have we had such a blatantly partisan president who stoked fear and division.

And while Biden isn’t my dream candidate, the messaging I’m hearing from his camp is that he wants to heal the divisions between us. Just hearing the messages from a more responsible adult gives me hope for a return to relative normalcy again. We might even be able to get the coronavirus pandemic under control.

But I don’t think that the next few months are going to be easy—especially if Trump loses. I think he will fight it tooth and nail. There’s no guarantee that this long nightmare will be over anytime soon. I hold faint hope that it will but there’s just as big a part of me that fears that we’ve already got a dictatorship in place. If that happens, I will be one who’s marching in the streets, damn the consequences. I have to do my part to try to salvage what’s left of our quickly-fading democracy.
